Do we choose or determine our relationships?

It is one of the largest questions that seekers pose to themselves: Does the choice of relationships depend on us or are they already determined in the womb? Do we love, and have families and friends through choice or are they all a work of God?

Spiritual wisdom explains the fact that both are true. Soul contracts and free will are synonymous and they form our relations in life.

What Are Soul Contracts?

The concept of soul contract implies that we do not come across people by accident. Souls also enter into a pact in the unborn world to relate to some individuals. These relationships, happy, hurtful or difficult, contribute to the development of the soul.

These contracts are associated with karma, the cause and effect law which transfers across the lifetimes. The past reconnects the souls in debts, attachments and lessons, until the learning is finished.

The Dynasty of Free Will in Relationships.

Although soul contracts predetermine the situation, it is up to free will to choose the way in which to react. One thing is that karma can make two individuals connected, but it is up to them whether they can love, forgive, or resist to keep that connection.

The scriptures are reminding us: karma makes the situation, but the free will determines the result.

Recognizing Karmic Bonds

Have you ever encountered a person and had a pull or felt a resistance towards them? They are usually indications of karma attachments.

A child can be born by the parent due to uncompleted relationships in a previous life.

Friends can reappear through different lives, but taking different roles to even out old scores.

Even enemies contribute their own role to make us face up against qualities, which we have to conquer.

Those are not accidents, these are contracts demanding resolution.

Story of King Bali: A Teaching in Free Will.

The Purana tells of King Bali in Vamana Purana that depicts the equilibrium of fate and decision. Lord Vamana requested three strides of land and Bali handed over his whole kingdom. This was not fate alone but also his free will to give up ego. The decision made him change his fate into greatness.

The situation was created by fate and its final choice was made by free will.

Dhamma of Bhagavad Gita.

According to Bhagavad Gita, the soul is neither born or not destroyed. Relationships are of the body and mind, which are not permanent. The soul is not attachable however.

Relationships are no longer cages when we view ourselves as pure consciousness. Rather, they turn into schools of development and educate us about the lessons that we need to learn on the way to be free.

How to Live with This Knowledge.

There is wisdom, which in our daily lives alters our relationships. Rather than posing a question, Why is this happening to me? we can pose:

So what is this soul contract teaching me?

But now what decision in place of enslavement can I make that can deliver peace rather than slavery?

This consciousness takes us out of the victim-hood to empowerment.

The Equilibrium Between Soul Contracts and Free Will.

The reality is not complicated, since certain relationships are predetermined, but what form of life we choose is in our power. Fate can determine who we can meet, but it is free will that can determine what type of adventure we reach together.

Final Thought

Ultimately, God alone or we alone do not select our relationships. It is never an alliance of action and will. The soul is the author of the contracts, but the pen is controlled by free will in every instance of life.

As Bapuji Dashrathbhai Patel explains, every relationship is a part of the soul’s journey — a reflection of past karmas and divine planning. Yet, through awareness and free will, the soul can transform bondage into liberation. 🌺 Understand, forgive, and rise beyond — that is true Paramshanti.
