Marriage: Something More Than a Relationship
The marriage between man and woman is not only about this life. Bapuji Dashrathbhai Patel says that marriage is an intimate, spiritual bond between two souls. It is not merely a social contract but a spiritual bondage that is created in many previous lives. However, nowadays relationships are a problem and confusion between many couples.
Across Many Lifetimes
Spiritually, the married couples have known each other in their previous birth. They have a deep emotional and spiritual connection due to the shared life in previous incarnations. However, nowadays, human beings have lost the sanctity of marriage. Consequently, increasing numbers of couples end up quarreling, miscommunication, and parting.
The way Souls entered Creation
At the start Brahma gave birth to the first divine male souls- the Saptarishis or Param Purush. Then these great souls produced many pure and powerful angel-like souls. The energy and purity of these souls gradually diminished as time passed and they reincarnated into other bodies. They transformed into the gods (Devtas), and then into human beings.
The Godly Male and Female Bond
Every Divine Male Soul (Param Purush) has a Divine Female Soul (Param Prakriti) to whom he is an exact match. They are united as Shiva and Shakti, which represents the balance in the universe. In the subtle world, one male divine soul can produce multiple Prakriti (female energies) in order to assist divine work. Through numerous births, these female souls are in pursuit of reconnection with their creator- the original divine male soul.
During ancient times, there were many queens with kings such as Raja Dashrath and Raja Janak. This was not on desire but since they had high spiritual positions. Even great sages possessed more than one wife to satisfy spiritual and Karmic responsibilities of the past lives. These were not worldly marriages.
Divine Marriages of Lord Krishna
Lord Krishna had 16,108 wives not because of his desire for the world. In order to live with each of the queens, Krishna assumed 16,108 forms of his subtle body. This divine act was witnessed by a divine sage called Rishi Narad. The purpose of the marriages of Krishna was to raise humanity and establish a pure spiritual lineage. His Heaven on Earth, Dwarka was made of gold.
Kaliyug: The Age of Confusion
Nowadays, in the era of Kaliyug, there is a spiritual imbalance. Most of the Divine Male Souls have fashioned a number of Divine Female Souls (Prakritis) however, they are in conflict with each other because of karma and the confusion. Lots of souls are in quest of their real partner in previous births. Such a mismatch leads to matrimonial conflicts and the absence of tranquility in families.
It is only the original first Prakriti which can cause total happiness and harmony to her original Param Purush. Other relationships can develop emotional attachment but no long lasting peace.
The Hindu Marriage Rituals: The Deeper Meaning
In Hindu weddings, the wedding couple is bound by seven holy knots and vows to live together in seven births. These are not mere rituals but spiritual promises. The priest is a Brahmin who blesses the couple so that the relationship remains connected to divine truth.
In the past, couples were expected to seek blessings by touching the feet of the elderly, hoping that they will have a great unity in this world and the one to come. Such customs are however disappearing. Most couples in these times have a lot of karmas in the past lifetimes that lead to pain, fights, and emotional battles.
What is the Way to Liberate Ourselves of Past Karmas
In order to be a happy and peaceful married person one has to be above the body and ego. The trick is to be soul conscious. This is done through the recollection of the Supreme Almighty Authority and through the daily spiritual practice-such as meditation and silence.
As soon as the soul gets in touch with the supreme source, it is recharged, to become pure again. Gradually the soul attains a karmateet state where it ceases to generate new karmas. In this state, a person is nearer to moksha (liberation).
Final Thought
Marriage is the experience of two spirits walking hand in hand to various lives. It is a profound connection beyond this world. It is by knowing its spiritual truth, and living in love and respect and awareness, we can make marriage a path of peace and growth and freedom.
