Suppose the most profound truth is this–you were not born, and you will not die? The old books keep on reminding us, you are not the body, you are not the wandering mind, you are not even the memories that contain you. You are the immortal soul–unshaken, boundless, and free.

The lessons of the Bhagavad Gita.

Bhagavad Gita also conveys this wisdom in an effective verse (2.20):

Na hanyamana hanyamane sharire – The soul is never killed even in the case of the destruction of the body.

This fact empowered such warriors as Arjuna in the battlefield. To realize that the soul is out of reach of death is to put on the armour of immortality.

The Vedas and Upanishads: The Message of the Vedas and Upanishads.

The Vedas proclaim that, you are not distinct from Brahman you are Brahman himself: all-powerful and immortal and shining.

This is expressed in the Upanishads in a simple three word statement: Tat Tvam Asi, That Thou Art. That power in the world that gives light to the sun, and to the wind, and forms and disbands the world’s entire–that power is in you. not beyond thee, but within thee, not over thee.

And yet, the majority of the people exist as though they were merely the body. They pursue enjoyment, fleeing pain and loss and forget about their eternity.

Rituals and The Truth of the Soul.

The rituals of the dead like giving them effigies of flour are a reminder of the soul to go beyond the body. However, rituals are not necessary by the soul in reality. It already has the power of eternity. It is we ourselves who are weak, not the soul.

It is not death that is really tragic but forgetting that we are Brahman. Fear and sorrow are in charge when we forget. But peace and freedom come even when we think of our nature.

The Role of the Guru

In this case, the guru is necessary. A real guru does not impart what he or she has borrowed; he makes eyes open. They put the seed of realization: You are Brahman. You are not powerless and incomplete, you are a world-maker.

At the time this dawning comes to a disciple, change happens. The mind is opened, previous karma is burnt, and even destiny is transformed.

Waking to the Eternal Soul.

Waking up, you are no longer a drop that has been lost in the storm of life, you see that you are this whole ocean. You are like light, as your presence is; it is your soul that shines through to your aura, to your house and to the universe. This is what it takes to know the eternal soul.

The Gita, the Vedas and the Upanishads do not consist of ancient books buried in history. They are speaking voices, they show us the way to get back to our real nature. They do not make us abandon the world, but to be in it consciously–not to regard ourselves as clay, but as the immortal fire that moulds the world.

To know this is freedom. To live this is liberation. and When the soul is enlightened, it becomes Brahman as revealed– infinite, bright and immortal.
